Emergency Plan

Image
As a result of the unfortunate circumstances of our beach filming day, we got together as a group and created several backup plans to reduce the risk of this happening in the future. We specifically looked for nearby indoor places in case of inclement weather and checked parts of our script that had interior scenes, like the bedroom scene to use as immediate alternatives if bad weather occurred. In order to streamline our decision-making, we decided to set wind and rain conditions for a no-go. In addition, we agreed to use a 24-hour process to confirm whether the shoot would go ahead before anyone travels. Technically, we have put together a "save-all" kit with towels and waterproof gear covers for our equipment in case of unexpected weather or any other unpredictable event. As well, if we use an area with a lot of noise, we have made a plan for audio 'contingencies' by recording clean tracks in a different location (like in a car) without noise. We also recognized th...

Production Day

Image
Shortly after filming some initial scenes, Rowan (who plays Brad), Lorena, Addyson, and I met at the beach where we filmed the rest of our scenes as a group. We had all arrived at the beach with a lot of energy, and it showed when we got into our costumes and makeup before stepping out onto the sand together. Originally we planned to complete Brad's individual beach footage first, then move onto our group scenes; however, due to heavy rain that started pouring down shortly after our arrival, we were unable to do that either. Due to weather issues, we tried to switch to filming Brad’s bedroom scenes from his house instead of outside, but further logistical issues arose and made this impossible. Since he lived too far away (1.5 hours), we would have run out of natural light before we ever had a chance to start shooting because Brad’s character’s point-of-view would require a very vibrant and overexposed look. As such, Brad’s second point-of-view will have the film being rescheduled t...

Editing

Image
After filming the first half of our short film, I gathered all the clips from my bedroom and beach and transferred them from my camera to my laptop. Once I had all of the clips on my laptop, I realized we had a lot of bloopers, so I went through about 50 clips and picked out the ones that worked out the way I wanted them to look. Once I got the desired clips i went to a software/app called After Effects and transferred all the clips onto there in the correct order of events. Once I had all the. clips in order i went back and adjusted the clips so there weren't any sudden cuts. For example, at the end of a lot of the clips, the camera was shaking from cutting the video or my group mates talking, so I cut those parts out. I also made sure the clips blended together smoothly to make the multiple angles look like the camera never moved at all. After that i went back to make sure it looked good and fixed any mishaps I might have missed. Once everything looked good, I sent the edited cl...

Filming

Image
After we filmed Laura's bedroom scenes, we moved on to filming Laura's beach scenes. I drove my group members and me to our local beach, knowing there wouldn't be many people there and it would be a perfect setting to film in. Once we got to the beach, we filmed me walking down the beach, which took a couple of takes because Lorena (camera woman) couldn't stop laughing due to the wind. So once we got a hold of ourselves, we managed to get the shot. After that, the next scene was Laura setting down her personal belongings and towel to settle in. Putting down the towel while the camera was rolling was particularly difficult due to the excessive wind. The towel either kept folding onto itself or onto me. So we decided to work with the wind and just cut the camera before the towel got messed up. The next scene was of me setting down the camera, spotting Brad, and running off. This scene took about 6 tries. We couldn't get the camera to have the right lighting, so we adj...

Start of Filming

Image
We started filming our movie, so we needed to figure out the availability of everyone in our group. So I texted everyone in our group if they can film on Tuesday after school. I also texted Rowan who was going to play Brad in our movie, if he was available to film after school on Tuesday. However, he was not available that day, so I texted the group to see if we still wanted to film that day. We decided that we would only film Laura’s perspective (my character) that day because I was available. So then we decided on a time and place to meet and go over the plan. Addyson suggested we meet at My house because I was going to be playing Laura, so all of my stuff would already be at my house. Everyone agreed, and we met there about 30 minutes after school. Once we all got to My house, we started to think about how we wanted my room set up for the film. I noticed that I had flower bouquets in my room. But we decided we were going to replace the live flowers with dead flowers I had in a...

Title Design

Image
The first thing we thought about was the font we wanted to use for our main title. We wanted to choose something that would give visual appeal and make people love and enjoy looking at it. Something in cursive emits love and happiness.  The coloring of the final title should be an ombre effect or a golden hue to represent the color story of the short film.  The size of the title will cover the screen almost fully. The other elements, such as the producer and director, will have smaller sizing on the screen and be placed at the bottom of the screen. The size will be something like this:  “The producer”.  My partners and I have decided to make the title “Finding you.” The words will appear on the screen during the transition of both characters getting ready. Allowing for a further dramatic effect.  Each title will be on the screen for about 2-4 seconds. The main title fades in and out at around 5 seconds.

We will then return to the vehicle we are traveling in to film the last scene of both Brad and Laura in the car.  Participants: Participants in the movie will include Bianca Pires and Rowan Starks. Part I: Laura’s Perspective – The Grey    Laura's Bedroom   The shot is close, lacking in color.  Laura  moves  with  a slow, labored pace. The only sound is that of a hairbrush working its way through a tangle. She is putting on a tint, but it  doesn’t   cover up  the exhaustion in her eyes. "Getting ready," she is, but it is more akin to donning armor to face a world she is not sure she wants to be in.    The Beach   She steps out onto the sand. The ocean is a dull gray, a hazy sky reflecting off its surface. She sets her camera on the sand, composing her shot. She sits down, hugging her knees to her chest , a  small, gray speck against the vastness of the ocean. She is "finding herself," she is, in this quiet place, but the quiet is just loud.   The Sighting   In the distance, a figure  emerges . A blur of motion. She stops. It is not fear, but a spark, a sudden jolt, that scares her more than the lo...
