Comparing La Jetee, the short, and the 12 monkeys, the full length movie
Today I will be discussing another short and long film movie, La Jetee, the short, and the 12 monkeys.
After watching the video that compared 12 monkeys to La Jetee a similarity between the two are is that they both come from a short film. It also says that both of the films explore how things will happen regardless. The concept of time is highlighted throughout both of the films. The differences stated in the video are that in La Jetee the protagonist can not escape a loop and is stuck in a repeating cycle. In 12 Monkeys it explains that the protagonist has to stop a major event.
The video also explained the importance of how manipulating time can help convey a story and create emotional depth. Time travel is the theme of both films. The 12 Monkeys film developed the overall theme with the ability to alter past events, while the La Jetee's used photography within nature to show the fixed nature to the set nature of time.
This has allowed me to understand the power visuals have on films!
The article compares the films as well and one of the differences is that La Jetee investigates the idea of memory in a more fleshed-out way and is mainly focused on time travel through very minimal visual language. However, 12 monkeys grew these ideas with different themes, such as metal illness and the nature of memory.
In La Jetee the protagonist is a victim but in 12 monkey the protagonist is putting in effort to changing the past. This created a shift in the narritve. La Jetee is mainly focused on the fate of the characters while 12 monkeys has a realistic sense of human impact. 12 monkeys has a more convenient structure compared to the photos in La Jetee.
The article also explains the difference between how the films used their forms. Both films showed the passage of time. Since La Jetee is all photos it shows still time, while 12 monkeys represents the urgency of time. This explains how I can use different forms in the project to create different feelings.
