Comparing 9, the short, and 9 the full length movie
Shane Ackers 9 started out as a short film in 2005 that developed into a full-length movie in 2009. Both the short film and movie take place in a time after an apocalypse occurred, where Rag dolls that were named after numbers try to survive. As we continue through this blog, I will continue to compare the short film and movie.
The short film is about 10 minutes long, with very little dialogue, and because of this, the audience is forced to use their imagination. Even though the film is short, it has a serious tone. The plot of the short film 9 is about this doll, named 9. The doll is trying to find any other dolls living after the apocalypse. Since it is a dystopian film, it is dark when watching it, and they have retro machine props. They do not include background stories on any of the characters, causing the film to seem underdeveloped.
Since it is a short film, the development of the character is limited. Doll 9 is determined to help protect the other survivors of the apocalypse. The audience has to use the visuals presented to them during the film, like the character's body language and facial expressions, to understand the plot of the story. Since the dialogue is very minimal.
In the short film, they include special effects like moving more slowly and having the characters reflect during the action. When the film focuses on the moment happening, it uses the setting to represent the emotional stake instead of relying on the plot to do so.
The movie, however, had a much deeper plot. It gave the characters a backstory before the apocalypse and showed what caused the apocalypse. As the movie contiues 9 creates relationships with other characters, but he has the same traits as the short film.
The characters are much more thought-out and developed throughout the movie. Which engages the audience emotionally. The only con of this is that some characters feel less developed, like 1,2, and 8.
The special effects in the movie were much cleaner. The action scenes were much more intense and creative. The setting of the movie is more throughout and detailed.
The movie has a structure: a beginning, middle, and end. Everything was much more developed and detailed. The con was that it takes away from the audience using their imagination.
The short film is more compelling because the audience has to use their creativity to understand the plot. It also has a more haunting atmosphere because of how quiet the film is. The phrase "less or more" does strengthen the film. But the long film has a more developed plot with deeper explored themes, which engages the viewers. This creates a more satisfying experience for the audience.
